When Neil Gordon moved to Wayne University in Detroit, Michigan (which later became Wayne State University), in 1942 to become the new chairman of the chemistry department, the Hooker Collection--by then encompassing 21 ,000 items-was also moved with the financial assistance of the Kresge Foundation and the local chemical community.
